Foothills – Glentui

The Glentui picnic area and tracks on Mt Richardson are part of the 10,800-ha Mt Thomas Forest Conservation Area. The Glentui area includes a pleasant picnic area with very easy family walks, through to day walks, along the ridgelines of Mt Richardson. The conservation area is bounded by the Ashley River to the south. The Ashley Gorge Recreation Reserve on the south bank is a very popular picnic and camping area.

Please note these tracks are managed by Department of Conservation and it is advised to always check their website for any alerts or closures prior to embarking on your journey.

Blowhard Track is partially closed. The track is closed past Māori Reserve Road. This is due to ongoing discussions with stakeholders.

Glentui Waterfall Track
Time/Distance: 350m one way
Grade: Short Walk

Access:

This walk starts from the Glentui Picnic Area.

Glentui Nature Walk(Loop Track)
Time/Distance: 1hr return, 2km
Grade: Short Walk

Access:

This walk starts from the Glentui Picnic Area.

Description:

The track descends to a bridge over the Glentui River and then climbs a ridge on the other side. Steep in places with a few major drop-offs before reaching the ridge. Good footwear is required.

Viewing:
River, ridge, forest.

Walk in an anti-clockwise direction to avoid steepness.

Mt Richardson Track
Time/Distance: 3hrs one way, 3.2km
Grade: Half Day

Access:

This walk starts from the Glentui Picnic Area.

Description:

Mountain beech/tawhai forest, tussock grassland, views of mountain ranges and Lees Valley.

Adjoining Tracks: From the summit follow the ridge along Blowhard Track for 3km to Bypass Track and back down to Glentui picnic area, or continue further down Blowhard Track to Maori Reserve Road.

Blowhard Track
Time/Distance: 4hrs one way, 10km
Grade: Half Day

Access:

Park at the end of Maori Reserve Road.

Description:

Tall open forest, tussock, skeleton tree trunk remnants from lightning strike fire.

Adjoining Tracks: Mount Richardson
(3 hrs one way) and Bypass Track (1-2 hrs one way downhill).

Bypass Track
Time/Distance: 2hrs downhill, 2.8km
Grade: Day Walk

Access:

Links the Mt Richardson and Blowhard Tracks, starting mid-point of the Blowhard Track.

Description:

Recommended to walk in clockwise direction due to steepness of track.

Mountain bikes and horses are not permitted on this track.

Ashley Gorge Waterfall Track
Time/Distance: 2 hrs return, 4km
Grade: Short Walk

Description:

The junction with the Waterfall Track is approx 20 minutes along the Loop Track. From here it is another 45 minutes to a beautiful waterfall.
