Your Ride, Your Way

Wanting to ride, catch up with friends, or get the family out and about without the commitment of that bigger ride… here are some trail suggestions to get your started. Either ride to the desired destination or stop along the way for some other recreational opportunities.

Woodend To Kaiapoi

Distance: 21km return
Grade: Easy, two-way shared with walkers
Starting Location: Woodend Beach.

Park up at Woodend Beach and jump of the Pegasus Bay Trail heading to Kaiapoi. This ride takes you through the forest, behind the Pines/Kairaki Beach Settlement and alongside Kairaki Stream, and the Waimakariri and the Kaiapoi Rivers.

Enjoy one of the eateries on offer at Kaiapoi (see here) return to Woodend and take a dip at the surf patrolled beach.

 

Waikuku to Rangiora

Distance: 27km return
Grade: Easy, two-way shared with walkers
Starting Location: Waikuku Beach, Park Terrace. Park in the beach/estuary car park.

From the majestic Ashley/Rakahuri Estuary in Waikuku to the vibrant township of Rangiora, this ride takes you through forests, farmland and alongside the Ashely/Rakahuri River. You can ride the stop bank or jump on the Rakahuri Trail for a bit of fun. Follow the signs.

Enjoy one of the eateries on offer at Rangiora (see here) return to Waikuku and take a dip at the surf patrolled beach.  Check out the Waikuku Beach Store for the best fish burger in the district.

 

Waikuku to Pegasus Town

Starting Location: Waikuku Beach, Kiwi Avenue
Distance: 12 kms return
Grade: Easy, two-way shared with walkers

From the idyllic beach settlement of Waikuku to the lakeside town of Pegasus, ride the Tūtaepatu Trail alongside a regenerating forest and around the Te Kōhanga Wetlands. This ride is flat, easy and well maintained. Perfect for the family or the more relaxed cyclist.

Indulge in one of two eateries in Pegasus Town (see here) or grab something from the takeaway restaurants for a feast lakeside. Take a stroll on the bridge over Lake Pegasus prior to returning to Waikuku.  If travelling with the kids, then take time to play on the flying fox, or end to the beach for a well-earned dip.
